As I have already said, Jackson and I were friends from school, although, it didn’t quite start out that way, to begin with.

To say I was not exactly popular in school would be an understatement. I was the shy, nerdy, small kid with bottle thick glasses and braces that would get top marks in class and was a wallflower in the playground. Not surprisingly I got picked on and it was Jackson’s little brood of super cool kids who did most of the picking.

We were only about seven or eight and hanging around in a classroom just before the lesson was about to start.

Blaine, one of Jackson’s more obnoxious friends (there were a number of them that fitted this description) had been perfecting a drawing of Mr. Bristow on the whiteboard that was less than flattering shall we say and then inscribed the legend “I’m a massive dick” next to it in his best handwriting. We were all standing around and admiring it like seven-year-old boys do, when in steamed the man himself. As large as life and twice as ugly and ALREADY in a towering rage about something or other and this was before he had seen us and what was on the whiteboard.

Instinctively, we all cowered and tried to pretend that we weren’t there. Mr. Bristow, a short squat squinting man, with unflattering glasses and a permanent scowl, glared at us as if we were something he had just trodden in.

He hated children and fuck knows why he wanted to be a teacher in the first place. I had learned pretty early on just to get out of his way when our paths crossed, but this time, there was absolutely no hiding place.

The three of us froze in the grips of his icy glare, as we stood against the whiteboard and I made frantic attempts to wipe the caricature off with my hands.

Of course, it was unsuccessful.

“And what is this.” He barked, in a voice so terrifying it almost stopped time.

We glanced between ourselves.

“Someone is quite the artist. But who I wonder?”

He said, pacing up and down in front of us like some sort of demented army major.

“Come on, who is it? Don’t be shy, boy!”

All three of us stared down intently studying the pattern on the floor.

“Speak up or all three of you will be taking a trip to the principal’s office and the whole class will be doing double detention – for a month!”

Collective punishments were something of Bristow’s specialty and he was well feared for this sort of thing.

The last time something like this had happened, the boy who had done it (whatever it was) was shunned by the entire class. There was no way we wanted a repeat of that event.

Blaine stared at me and Jackson in panic. His eyes were transmitting pure rays of terror into ours; his report card was full to bursting already with misdemeanors. We both knew the last thing he needed was a trip to the principal’s office.
